Star anise
Star anise gives a full, sweet flavour to pastries, sauces or stews. The spicy, anise-like flavour is in the skin of the star-shaped fruit and can be used whole as a flavour enhancer. Because star anise has a strong flavour, a small amount is enough.
Star anise (Illicium verum) is the dried fruit of a tree in the Schisandra family that grows mainly in Asia.
Star anise is attributed with various health-promoting properties:
- Protects against bacteria and viruses
- Works as an antioxidant
- Promotes digestion
- Aphrodisiac
Store in a cool, dry place, shelf life is maximum 24 months.
